How do you name the new years of the present century like 2012, 2001? Are they named the same way as 1801, 1802, 1820...? And the year 1004? Everytime we study how to name the years in 2ºESO, I realize that the way we read years is a little complicated in English and for foreign learners it can be confusing and ambiguous.

YEARS ...most common pronunciation:

en 235 --> in two thirty-five
en 1000 --> in one thousand
en 1.004 --> in one thousand and four / in ten oh-four
en 1050 --> in ten fifty
en 1225 --> in twelve twenty-five (normal rule)
en 1900 --> in nineteen hundred / in nineteen aught
en 1901 --> in nineteen oh-one

Do you know the American program MTV Tuning presented by the rap singer Xzibit? I'm sure you do but, when the program starts the song says an expression that sounds a little bit "weird".

1. What "pimp" means? 2. A "pimp" was, and still is, an individual who manages prostitutes. Back in the 1970's they were known to dress in very extravagant clothes such as large fancy hats with feathers and bright and colorful clothes.

The word 'pimp' is now used to describe someone or something that is dressed up to excess. In the case of the TV show, the cars are extravagantly dressed up from the original junkers they were. You could also say a person is "pimped out" because they are dressed up in all their finest clothes.

USES:
1. Already ("ya")normally refers to something that is in the present or recent past. It is mainly used in affirmative sentences and usually expresses surprise that something has happened sooner than expected (Present Perfect): "He has already found his keys"

A) Uses:

1. Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.

Example: My bike was stolen.
In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.

2. Passive voice is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows:
Example: A mistake was made.
In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone (e.g. "You made a mistake!"). If you want to blame on that person, you can write this: "The mistake was made by you!" but you will probably say the active sentence.

3. Passive voice is used in scientific writing to get a more objective and precise text :
Example: Later, these results are analyzed by the experts.

What are the differences between them?
A......What and which can be interchangeable with little or no difference in meaning. Often what and which are used for the sake of variety.
1. Which / What would you say are the most polluted cities in the world?
2. What / which route did you take?

B...........However, when we are choosing between just two or three options, we usually prefer which. If there is no limit to the number of choices, what is used.

1. What would you like in your sandwiches? I've got cheese or tuna. Which would you prefer?

C..........what / which before nouns can be used interchangeably to ask questions about people or things:

1.What / Which colour trousers would you like? Brown, green, blue, orange or maroon?
2.Which / What writers have made the biggest impression on you?

D............which - before 'one' and 'of'.

However, if we wish to use the which of or which one constructions, our choice is limited to which:

In other words...

Let's remember the uses for MAY and MIGHT (4ºESO)...

A) MAY:

1. We can use 'may' to ask for permission. However this is rather formal and not used very often in modern spoken English
Ex: May I borrow your pen?
May we think about it?
May I go now?

2. We use 'may' to suggest something is possible.

Ex: It may rain later today.
I may not have time to do it today.
Pete may come with us

B) MIGHT:

1. We use 'might' to suggest a small possibility of something. Often we read that 'might' suggests a smaller possibility that 'may', there is in fact little difference and 'might is more usual than 'may' in spoken English.

Ex: She might be at home by now but it's not sure at all.
It might rain this afternoon.
I might not have time to go to the shops for you.
I might not go.

2. For the past, we use 'might have'.

Ex: He might have tried to call while I was out.
I might have dropped it in the street.

Según una encuesta realizada a pie de calle por televisión española, los españoles reconocemos que el inglés (y los idiomas en general) sigue siendo nuestra asignatura más pendiente. ¿Será nuestra situación geográfica, alejados de centroeuropa? ¿Será la paella, la siesta, los toros?

El caso es que dicha encuesta afecta igualmente a nuestros más recientes presidentes de Gobierno: José María Aznar y su inglés de acento tejano aprendido casi al final de su mandato o nuestro actual presidente José Luis Zapatero que no se defiende nada bien delante de los periodistas británicos.

El caso es que debemos seguir rompiendo barreras lingüísticas y dedicar un poco más de nuestro tiempo a viajar, conocer y hablar otras lenguas que nos permitan conocer mejor a nuestros aliados, nuestros vecinos...

ahí va un poco de gramática para los más inquietos en lengua inglesa: "El estilo indirecto" (the reported speech) o lo que es lo mismo, decir lo que ha dicho otro anteriormente. Un ejemplo en español:

El próximo 2 de febrero, los estadounidenses celebrarán una de las fechas más peculiares del calendario popular: El Día de la Marmota o Groundhog Day.

Tal y como lo indica su nombre, este acontecimiento anual tiene como protagonista a la marmota, un mamífero roedor de cabeza gruesa y aplastada, orejas pequeñas y espeso pelaje de color pardo, que se distingue por pasar el invierno hibernando en su madriguera.

La tradición dice que en la mañana del 2 de febrero, la marmota despierta después de su larga siesta de invierno, emerge de su guarida, y en cierta forma, "pronostica" la duración de la temporada de frío.

Miles de curiosos acuden a la ciudad de Punxsutawney, en Pensilvania, para presenciar el momento en el que esto ocurre, y de esta manera, esperar la "señal" de una simpática marmota de nombre Phil.

Sin duda, Phil es uno de los animales más célebres del país, pues como la "marmota oficial", ha tenido la importante tarea de dictaminar el final del invierno durante más de 120 años.

De acuerdo a la leyenda, si Phil observa su sombra al salir, esto quiere decir que el invierno se prolongará durante seis semanas más, por lo que regresará a su madriguera para resguardarse de las bajas temperaturas.

Por el contrario, si Phil no ve su sombra y se queda retozando en las afueras de su pequeño hogar, esto indicará la pronta llegada de la primavera.

Cada año, la esperanza es que esto último ocurra, pero en realidad, es poco probable, ya que, según muestran registros oficiales, esto ha sucedido apenas un 10 por ciento de las veces.
